The Sea Girt Police Department's primary function would be in the area of patrol. Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, and three-hundred sixty-five days a year the Sea Girt Police Department patrols the streets of Sea Girt. The police patrol unit is the most recognizable function of the police department and has the most contact with the residents and visitors of the Borough of Sea Girt. The Sea Girt Police Department uses three main means of patrol. Radio cars are the most seen and easily recognized means of patrol. The patrol vehicles respond quickly to calls for service to anywhere in town in only minutes. Most often seen patrolling the Borough are the four marked Ford Crown Victoria patrol vehicles. Other vehicles in the fleet are rotated into patrol as need or as special needs arise. Each shift of each day will always have marked radio cars patrolling the streets. The best way to bring the police to the residents and visitors as well and be directed closer to known problems areas or events is to put officer on their feet and in the street. The Sea Girt Police Department uses foot patrol in times when crowds of visitors or special events dictate. From Memorial Day to Labor Day everyday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. the beaches and boardwalk area are patrolled on foot. Additionally, each weekend night from 6 p.m. until about 3 a.m. foot patrols are deployed in the beachfront area and in the area of downtown. In the past few years there has been a trend nationwide by police agencies to place officers out on patrol utilizing mountain bikes. The Sea Girt Police Department deployed officers on mountain bike in 1999 and it has been a great success. The bicycle provides a greater visibility yet offers the officer concealment when needed. It also allows a quicker response to calls for service then foot patrol but is able to gain access to calls where it is not practical for vehicle to travel. It also make for easy travel through the heavy traffic created by the flood of summer tourists. The means of patrol vary from day to day and are dictated by weather conditions. There is always a Sea Girt Police officer patrolling the streets and maintaining order. |
