Police patrolling on bicycle is not new to law enforcement but over the past 10 years has taken hold in almost every community. The bicycle provides a greater visibility yet offers the officer concealment when needed. Bike patrols have become common place at the Jersey Shore as it allows officers to quickly navigate through the heavy traffic caused by the great influx of visitors which descend on the area. The Sea Girt Police Department first deployed the bicycle patrol units in 1999 through an effort by Patrolman Doug Nesbit. Since that time the unit has grown to become a common sight in the borough throughout the summer months. Bicycle patrol units are deployed primarily through the summer months from Memorial Day until Labor Day. The units are deployed throughout the day, all week long, in the beach and boardwalk area. On the weekends the bikes come out at night to combat the quality of life issues. It is also not unlikely to see the bicycle units at special events or at any time a large group or gathering is expected at anytime during the year. This year the bike patrol was expanded to include four Raleigh mountain bike. This expansion was possible through efforts by Patrolman Justin Macko who took two bicycles we previously had and lobbied for the addition of the other two bicycle. He then took over the day to day maintenance of the bicycles to keep the units running smooth throughout the summer. |
